Will Schneider-White states that he “makes modest, figurative paintings about being a person” (2014). While this statement belies his sophisticated approach to and modernist aesthetic of figurative painting, his works are indeed modest in scale. His paintings explore the relationship of the human body to space and to other people through a developing mysterious and atmospheric compositions. They are at once beautiful and strange, unsettling and serene. He received his MFA from the Slade School of Art in London and BFA from the Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland, Oregon. His works have been exhibited at VOLTA NY and Hamiltonian Gallery in Washington, DC where he also holds a fellowship. He is currently the Fountainhead Fellow in the Painting + Printmaking Department at Virginia Commonwealth University.
The Fountainhead Fellowship is a highly competitive award given to one recent MFA graduate in the VCUarts departments of Sculpture + Extended Media, Painting + Printmaking, and Craft + Material Studies (two fellowships are given in crafts). The award is jointly sponsored by VCUarts and Fountainhead Development Services. Each recipient is given a studio space, furnished apartment, stipend, teaching opportunities, and an exhibition in Richmond.
